One last bit of semi-seriousness for you all. After crises, there's that period of manic activity, the twitching, the inability to calm down... then the gravity of everything hits, the relief, the worry, and one near collapses. To have this hit like I wanted it to, I had to say something about it - not go all Smallville on it and pretend it never happened (i.e. "Alicia who?" if you follow - or followed in my case - the series).
I shall say briefly that yesterday was HAT DAY, and I was foolish and did not warn you on Friday, so if you didn't remember, it was all my fault (well, mostly my fault. You all should have marked your calendars). I suggest that should you have forgotten it, to celebrate it at your convenience this week, and don the jaunty chapeau of your choice for a day. You shall not regret it!
Anyhow. Enough of nattering in that regard. There is importantness afoot! You may know my friend Phil (as I have been linking him almost constantly, because of him doing awesome stuff): Phil is coming down to E3. And while he's there (being the film student he is), he's gonna make a documentary about it. And it will be awesome. BUT! Recently disaster struck! Phil's college is basically kicking the shit out of him with long-distance charges, and long story short: he needs your help. And by Bob, I am NOT letting a gamer not get to go to E3 because of long-distance stupidness on behalf of a college, no sir! So here's the deal: if you donate, he'll give you a special comic or a piece of art, AND put your name in the "Special Thanks" part of the documentary credits (how fuckin' cool is THAT!). AND! If you donate more than $10, he'll actually mail you a honest-to-goodness piece of real E3 swag just for being so awesome. And I'll up the ante by saying if you donate $20 or more, I will also not only send you some E3 swag as well, but a little drawing doodily-thingie, just to help Phil get on his way. So c'mon - help out a friend and donate to a very worthy cause? Sure, it's not curing cancer or anything, but it's for a gamer in need, who will furthermore throw open the gates of mystery and show the world what the E3 is really like, in all its madness and excitement. It'll be amazing. It'll be hilarious. And I'll be in it. So DONATE, goddammit. Please? ::sweet puppy face::
You know what day it is? Tuesday. Which means it is time for your weekly LINKSTRAVAGANZA! Joy!
* In case you didn't follow the multiple links it's been given - being an Eisner Award Nominee and all - I highly suggest you read Jonny Crossbones. It's a fun story, and if you've EVER read any Tintin graphic novels you will SQUEE in delight at viewing this, a spiritual successor to it in many ways (even in font, holy crap!)
* Speaking of Eisner Award Nominees, you really should read Mom's Cancer: it's a really moving and well-told story that's almost guaranteed to bring you near tears, especially if you or a loved one has struggled through something similar. It's up on the web only for a short time for award-judging purposes (and then will be put into print form in 2006) so read it quickly while you can - it is not to be missed.
* A little gem for you here: if you've ever dig detective stories, even just a little bit, you will enjoy (I hope) Peb Casey: Private Eye Butterfly - and not just because his expressions remind me of the Tick every now and then. It's a nifty story - a butterfly PI in a city full of spiders (trust me, it's more awesome than I just made it sound) - with art that grows increasingly more nifty and lush as it goes along. Check it out.
* I can't say much to introduce this other than... it's Nintendo themes, done a-capella. Geeky guilty pleasure.
* Again, I can do little to introduce this marvel. It's been linked by many - including Penny Arcade - but I have to link it here. The ending (complete with credits) of Final Fantasy VI, as performed by game consoles. The PSP is Kefka. It's long, and tremendous, and has so much concentrated inside jokes and gamer humor and subtle references to both game consoles and Final Fantasy VI itself that no one can walk away from it disappointed. Give it a look - you won't be sorry.
* Forum battles can be insane. But watching them personified by text is hilarious. Confused? Likely so. Go see what I mean.
* Soooo... they're talking about putting a monkey on a SWAT team. No, seriously, that's for real. GO MY HOMETOWN! I can see it now: the attackers are holed up, and notice... "Hey, check it out, a monkey!" "Aw, he's in a black jumpsuit! That's so cute!" "Oh, lookit, now he's dancing! Dance monkey dance!" "He's distracted them! NOW TAKE THEM OUT!" "Wha - OMFG COPS ARRGH ::dead::" Brilliance!
* I'm just saying here. If you don't read McSweeney's, you are missing out on some truly hilarious shit. Seriously. Like "Your Best Guy Friend Is Me" and "A Realistic Assesment of How Many 12-Year Olds I Could Beat Up Before They Overtook Me." If you don't read it, you are only hurting yourself. Dude. And once they totally joined up with They Might Be Giants and it was totally awesome. THE END.
Gotta run - must taste sweet sleep again before the rigors of the morrow - but be good, all.
