Whatever Comes To Hand
June 21, 2005
Annie's a bit out of sorts today, so you get my rant. And here it begins...

On the 11th, our net connection went to ass. Not just our internet, no, the raw network connection that hooks us up to the University of California, Irvine. Seems that the local residential network guys fucked up on their configuration of a router, and rather than it playing like a good little router, it's streaming hundreds of "ICMP unreachable" packets every second. You wouldn't think that would bork your connection, I mean, it's only a few hundred k/second (and even on the ghetto 10mbit they are running around here, that's nothing), right?

Well, you and I would be wrong. For you see, the router is also doing a bit of ARP table poisioning. For those of you who aren't into this kind of stuff, essentially it makes everyone's network adapter think that it should be talking to shitty router rather than good router (though why there are two in this subnet is a mind boggler).

Anyways, so they don't fix stuff on weekends, and since last week was finals week, they didn't fix it then either. Well, they still haven't gotten around to it, and our network connection sucks balls. How bad is it? I have a machine in my office. Normally I can get 1 meg/second sustained transfer without issue. I am getting 30k/sec, and the connection drops like a $2 whore (rough and often if you didn't know). I can barely surf the internet, and fetching email happens "when the stars deem it so".

We did get a bit of WoW playtime in tonight, but then our ping time started increasing beyond 1 second... 1.5... 2... 4... 8... 9?!? I could text message faster than that. Tomorrow I'm going to have a little talk with the resnet folks (I'm going to walk down there and hit them with bricks), so perhaps I can read my fucking email and upload the goddamn comic.

It almost makes a guy willing to pay for DSL.

Annie would also like to put out a call for a guest strip. Best guest strip gets a little somethin'-somethin' (a new design from our soon-to-be opened new store). Send em in!
