Yes, this is sadly true. My experiences haven't so much been with fanart as they have with simple searches for reference photos and so on, but the art that has come up as a result has scarred me in the deepest recesses of my soul. Just a simple search for "Samus Aran" to find a good reference picture brought up - as one of the very first hits - a picture so hideous and foul that even thinking of it makes me shudder and wince in pain. Fan art for me, gentle readers, most often fits into three categories: whoa, that's really good; eeegh, why would you show this to anyone; and OH GOD MY EYES KILL IT WITH FIRE. I have been very lucky to have all my fanart be so super-awesome that it fills me with rabid joy and self-important glee, and a secret shame that I wish my OWN art were as good (seriously, you guys all kick my ass) - but I have seen some on our mighty INTARWEB that makes my brain burn. Don't use Google Image Search on anything less than Strict Safe search, I tell you WHAT - else you might find a picture of Ridley doing things to Samus with his tail that... oh, shit, I got that image in your heads now too. Eep. So now you see what I'm talking about - probably far more ACUTELY than you EVER wanted to - and can imagine why the very memory sends me into cold sweats, pulling a page out of Heart of Darkness and rock back and forth, whispering "the horror... the horror..." into the night.
Or something. But anyhow.
