Humor of Last Resort
June 30, 2006
Yep - that is pretty much where my brain is currently at, wacked-out on illness and lack of sleep and my own general homegrown crazy. In the midst of feeling tremendously sorry for myself and wishing for a kind of "humor reserve," I sort of started musing on what I would actually KEEP in the reserve. Most of the ideas I ferret away are for story arcs - anything humorous I come across I usually shriek "MUST DO THIS NOWS!" and make a comic on it as soon as I can... it's been my thing to not put it aside, lest it lose its freshness. And in retrospect, some of the stuff I used to snicker at when it was new has lost some of its luster. (Ah, Domo-kun, I remember the days when people squawked in surprise that you were a Japanese poop monster. Now even you are passé, alas) But all my bitching aside - although guest comics (which I shall harp on until the string breaks) are always appreciated, they are by no means a sign that the well of creativity has gone dry. Were that to happen, it is possible that my judgement would have deterorated so much that I would acquiesce to Web Guy Josiah's demands, and the dreaded "Wangzilla" would appear in this space. WHICH WILL NOT HAPPEN. (ask not for whom this terse stare is intended, my sweet - it is for thee) But yeah.

PEOPLE. I rarely go all mouth-frothy at things that I think you must experience. But DAMMED if you shouldn't all go out and buy the book The Lies of Locke Lamora right now. Not because I know the author, Scott Lynch (I do) and not because he is a hell of an awesome guy (he is) - but because it is one of the best damn books I have ever read, and if you do not read it you are MISSING THE HELL OUT. I mean it. Buy it as soon as you can, because before you know it every place near you will be SOLD OUT. Damn good read. I don't want to hear "oh blah blah I don't like fantasy blah" SHUT UP, BUY IT, READ IT. It's not "fantasy" as you might think of it - no dragons, no elves - it's con men and rogues and secret police and nobility and intrigue and danger and humor and death, and it will kick your ass with all its awesome. The end. (BUY IT GODDAMMIT!)

And finally, I present to you a short and poetic film (made from the game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) which you all should watch, called simply: The Adoring Fan at Dive Rock. Sound is absolutely essential to the experience.

And that's it for me - see you punks on Tuesday, where here in the US we will be drinking lots of alcholic beverages and lighting stuff on fire, and my beloved Web Guy Josiah will be leaving in the morning to go to Latvia and present a paper. Take care of my sweetie, Eastern Europe!
