PAX - How It Went Down For Me
August 29, 2006
Alas: due to the time it took to actually scan my sketches and put the comic TOGETHER, there will not be much of a rant here in this space. Instead, you can pretty much find it in the comic itself, as I walk through my sketches (all but one done on the plane ride back) that retell my experience at the Penny Arcade Expo that took place this past weekend. ...Which is to say that I cannot really jot the experience down so well, but if I had to sum it up in a word, I'd say it was phenomenal. In three words, it fucking ROCKED. Both are entirely accurate. And I should warn you that I will never NOT be at PAX from now on, which is to say that I shall ever and always plan to BE there. Fairly warned be ye, peoples.

My mind nags at me to summarize. It was full of its own little hassles, to be sure: standing and showing a game with a tiny team (such that doing things such as taking a lunch or heading to the bathroom has to be handled with teamwork and cooperation, someone else picking up the slack as one goes to Do their Thing), having a computer whose video card seemed intent to burn itself alive, my recalcitrant body refusing to roll with the punches as well as it did ten years ago, and the eternal pain of not being able to see all the things one wants due to the twin terrors of other obligations and not having enough time in the day. But even these things were moderated: our hassles (awful as they were) helped bring the dedication and efficency and kindness of the PAX Enforcers into sharp focus, showing the game helped me meet and talk to many great individuals whom I greatly enjoyed speaking with (and you should all know how much I love my goddammed awesome game), and that precious little time I had made me all the happier to spend it with old friends and new friends both. And holy shit, I HAD SO MUCH FUCKING FUN. A dude even recognized me from my comic as he was in a food line! Can you beat that? ALSO it was at PAX, so the answer is NO you CAN NOT. The end.

Anyhow! This is the part where I say something witty to close out the comic until the next scheduled update, but I'm still tired as hell, and ramped up from PAX. Part of me wants to go back right now, even as when I was there, part of me wanted to cry out, "Hail, my gamer brothers and sisters! Know that I am filled with joy, because I know - as I always have - that I am one of YOU!" But you know me and being overdramatic.

(But god DAMN those beanbags were a great idea. And indeed - all hail the ball.)

I've fixed the link to the forum at the front page, 'hitting previous on the first comic gives you a 403', and 'hitting next on the last comic gives you a 403'. Enjoy.
